The upcoming general elections in India are scheduled to take place from 19 April 2024 to 1 June 2024. It is a significant event where every Indian citizen has the privilege to exercise their right to vote and choose their preferred candidate. Voting is not only a fundamental right but also a crucial element of democracy. It grants eligible citizens the power to select representatives who will govern and make decisions on their behalf. By participating in the voting process, individuals contribute to promoting inclusivity and representation in the political sphere. Regardless of one’s background, caste, creed, or socio-economic status, every eligible citizen is provided with an equal opportunity to participate in shaping the future of the nation. If you are eligible to cast your vote this year, we are here to assist you in understanding the process of voting in India.

How to cast a vote in person: A step-by-step guide

  1. Verify eligibility and enroll: Confirm that you fulfill the requirements for voting, including being an Indian citizen and at least 18 years old by January 1.
  2. Verify name on electoral roll: Prior to the election, it’s recommended to verify your name on the electoral roll online or at a nearby polling station to ensure accuracy.
  3. Verification at the polling station: Upon reaching the polling station, an authorized personnel will cross-check your name on the voter list and authenticate your identification document.
  4. Inking and slip collection: The second polling official will ink your finger, issue a slip, and record your signature in a register (Form 17A).
  5. Deposit slip and proceed: Hand over the slip to the third polling official, show your inked finger, and proceed to the polling booth.
  6. Record your vote: Utilise the Electronic Voting Machine (EVM) to cast your vote by pressing the ballot button opposite the symbol of your chosen candidate. A beep sound will confirm your selection.
  7. Verify VVPAT slip: After voting, check the slip displayed in the transparent window of the Voter Verifiable Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machine. The slip will exhibit the candidate’s serial number, name, and symbol for 7 seconds before dropping into the sealed VVPAT box.
